Zion Lutheran’s Mission
Zion Lutheran’s mission is to provide a loving, Christ-centered, developmentally appropriate learning experience and to spiritually guide young children to learn about and develop an everlasting relationship with Jesus.
Zion Lutheran does not discriminate the acceptance of children and their families based on race, color, religion, nationality, or ethnic origin. We welcome families whether they attend Zion Lutheran Church or not.
We offer three distinct programs for young children:
- Students who are 3-years old by September 1 meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30a.m.-11:30a.m. This class is considered Preschool
- Students who are 4-years old by September 1 meet on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 8:30a.m.-11:30a.m. This class is also considered Preschool
- Students who are 4 ½-5 years old by December 1 meet Mondays through Fridays from 11:45a.m.-2:45p.m. This is the Developmental Kindergarten class.
The descriptions of the Preschool and Developmental Kindergarten (DK) program are found below. If you wish to discuss these programs or have questions about which program would be best suited for your student, please contact the Directors of the programs.
These programs are reviewed by an active Preschool/DK Board which is comprised of parents, teachers, grandparents, Pastor Matthew Peters, and Mr. Horning (Zion’s Youth and Family Director) to ensure that the best educational and spiritual experiences are presented to children.
Usually parents are welcomed to come and visit the classroom at any time to observe their child or volunteer for special activities. Due to COVID-19, however, if you wish to visit or assist in the classroom, please contact Mrs. Timm, the School’s Director.
Zion Lutheran’s Preschool and Developmental Kindergarten programs are tuition based. Depending upon circumstances, we do offer a limited amount of scholarships to those who meet our financial criteria. For any special circumstances regarding tuition, please contact Mrs. Kimberlea Timm, the School’s Director.

MI Safe Start School Reopen Plan
During this unprecedented time in our lives, Zion Lutheran is aware of the concerns about COVID-19 and we know that some parents are uncertain about sending their child to school. Please be assured that your child’s safety is our utmost concern. In accordance with the School Reopen Plan, we have set in place guidelines that staff, students, and families will need to follow. These guidelines include teachers modeling how to social distance in the classroom, and in other areas of the school, and the promoting of handwashing throughout the day. Please know that we will take every precaution necessary to provide your child and you with a safe and fun learning environment. We also have a custodian for our school who will sanitize the classrooms.
The Preschool Program
Our preschool program is a play-based, academic program that will prepare your child for Kindergarten, as well as teach him or her about Jesus in a fun, active, and Christian setting. We use the Zoo-phonics program to teach about letters and sounds. Lessons are age-appropriate and individualized to meet the needs of each student. The school has a large indoor gymnasium for play and a beautiful green grass playground area with sandbox, climbing toys, and a playhouse for outdoor play.
The Developmental Kindergarten Program
This program is designed to promote a learning environment for young 5-years old students who may need another year of social, emotion, or academic growth before entering the rigors of Kindergarten. This is a slower-paced program than Kindergarten, so students have time to learn how to become social and learn other important life skills. Emotionally, students, through their success in school, can gain confidence in their abilities, develop as independent thinkers, and begin to grasp how important they are to Jesus, their family, and their peers.
Spiritually, through Pastor Peters’ and Mr. Horning’s weekly Bible Studies as well as through day-by-day activities at school, students will learn about Jesus and how He loves and cares for them. Zion Lutheran’s goal is to help each student develop and nurture an everlasting relationship with the Lord.
Academically, the students will be exposed to the foundations of Kindergarten: letters and their sounds, learning to read simple high-frequency words, developing important reading skills and strategies, rhyming words, and practicing listening for syllables in words. Numerically, the students will be learning to count and recognize numbers. They will then learn to apply those numbers to real-life experiences. There is also a Science and Social Studies component to the program as well as using technology.
The program offers a variety of opportunities to learn in the classroom and beyond. Hands-on and station activities, play, dance, sing, work on projects and using technology are just a few of the different experiences they will have. They will also take books and the classroom newspaper home to read with family members.
Class size is small, with a maximum of 10 students, so each student receives a personalized education (known as Differentiated Instruction) to meet his or her needs. For the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year, remote learning is being considered as an option for families who are uncertain about in-class learning.
To learn more about the Developmental Kindergarten program, please view the program’s curriculum below and feel free to read the quotes from previous DK Families.
Quotes from Previous DK Families
“We truly appreciate Mrs. White and her commitment to excellence as a developmental kindergarten teacher! She is compassionate, patient, and incredibly skilled in her ability to bring the best out of every individual student. Her curriculum is appropriately challenging, and she has the ability to meet every student where they are in their own educational journey. Our son truly thrived under Mrs. White’s leadership in the classroom and I have no doubt he will walk into the kindergarten classroom confident, positive about school, and ready for success!” (Class of 2019-2020)
